On Ego-Functions, Ego-Splits, Character Structure, and Bridges Between Classical Psychoanalysis, Object Relations, and DGB Multi-Dialectic-Integrative Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is not about introjecting and/or identifying with The Master's thoughts and theoretical-therapeutic conclusions but rather 'carefully chewing' them, judging them for 'taste' and 'nutrition value', 'spitting out' that which is deemed distasteful and/or non-nutritious (toxic), and after careful and sufficient 'chewing', swallowing down what is deemed nutritious.

The oral-anal bipolarity is still a very useful set of metaphors by which to investigate and study the human personality.

Here is another one that we can mix in with it.

1. 'Red blood cells' are designed to bring nutrients into the body that give us energy to live by. As red blood cells lose their efficiency over time, in connection with the other organic, structural, and/or biochemical processes also tied into to 'energy production', we start to die. On a psycho-dynamic level -- and following the medical model here (which does not mean extending the medical model into pharmaceutical meds unless there is a very good reason for going there) -- similarly to body (as the mind, brain, and body all work dialectically together), when the mind loses its ability to 'intake psychological nutrients' (also, affecting the process of energy production) -- it meaning our 'mind-brain-body' starts to die, psychologically, existentially, socially, and somatically. So, for argument sake, let us say that one fourth of the functioning of the human mind-brain-body (mbb) is tied into 'nutrient intake and energy production'. To this, we will give the name -- not 'oral phase' -- but rather 'oral function' -- of the mbb;

2. White blood cells defend the organism (mbb) and along with the particular inter-connected organs and processes tied into defending the organism, help to either remove and/or destroy perceived toxic invaders that are trying to harm the organism's or mbb's integrity and function. To this we will give the name -- not 'anal phase' -- but rather 'anal function';

3. The organism/ mbb needs -- ideally speaking -- at least 8 hours a day sleeping so that it can restore its oral and anal functions back to high levels of efficiency by the next day. We will call this -- not the latent phase -- but rather the latent-withdrawal-restorative function' of the organism/mbb;

4. The oganism/mbb needs to propagate and thus continue the survival of the species. To this we give the name -- not phallic or genital stage -- but rather 'genital function' of the organism;
In summary, we have four main functions of the organism;

1. Nutrient intake (oral function);
2. Toxin removal (anal function);
3. Withdrawal and restoration (withdrawal and restorative function);
4. Propagation of the species (genital function).

This now becomes the bridge -- or at least a GAP-DGB bridge -- between Classical Psychoanalysis and Object Relations...

Because -- for argument sake -- let us say that 'the ego splits' to look after each of these main four functions of the organism into....

1. The Oral-Nurturing Ego;
2. The Libidinous-Pleasure-Seeking Ego;
3. The Withdrawing-Distancing Ego;
4. The Anal-Righteous Ego;

And 'splits again' like cells split for greater specialization....

1. The Oral-Nurturing Parent-Ego;
2. The Libidinous-Pleasure-Seeking Parent Ego;
3. The Withdrawing-Distancing Parent Ego;
4. The Anal-Righteous Parent Ego;
5. The Oral-Assertive Child-Ego;
6. The Withdrawing-Distancing Child Ego;
7. The Libidinous-Pleasure-Seeking Child-Ego
8. The Anal-Rebellious Child-Ego;

To which we add two final pieces -- at least of this part of the personality;

9. The Central-Integrating Ego;

10. The Phenomenology of Spirit (The Emotional Thermostat of The Personality -- guilty, angry, enraged, resentful, happy, ecstatic, anxious, depressed, grief-stricken, etc...)

And now we have tied Classical Psychoanalysis (Three Essays on The Theory of Sexuality, 1905) to Melanie Klein's post 1920 creation of Object Relations...and also to Eric Berne's later work in Transactional Analysis...and from Transactional Analysis to GAP-DGB Philosophy-Psychology...
